Possum's Story:-
July 26 09
11.30am.
The van door slides open, and I see my new forever family for the first time.Theres a mum, dad, and a lad. After alot of talking and people looking at me with sad eyes Im put in the boot of a car.I have warm quilts to curl up on,and soft voices are talking to me.There is a smell in here of other dogs, but I dont recognise them.On this journey Im given a hamburger.I fall asleep but not a deep one .The car has stopped, its raining, the boot opens, and the mum put a coat on me it smells of a dog.A lead is clipped on and Im carried out and put on a road. The car drives off but the mum is with me. We walk slowly,my side really hurts{spey} but I cant let anyone know.we stop under a tree at the bottom of a hill, and thats when I saw him for the first time.Over the top of the hill he came dragging the dad along. We meet under the tree, its his smell on the coat and in the car.Hes called Dingo,a big golden lurcher. We walk to the top of the hill and I see my house for the first time with the lad standing in the rain with another dog.Shes called Totty, a short dog not long like Dingo and me.We all go through a gate and im allowed to look around the garden.Next Im shown the house and my bed.The humans sit down and leave us dogs to get on with sniffing each other out.Im tired so I crawl on my quilt, ohhh that hurts.Im given tea and I go outside. Before I know it its bed time.Upstairs I crawl into a bed[Dingos], hes really put out but he soon settles in Tottys bed.
The next morning I cant go down stairs its too scary and my side still hurts.Dad carries me. I have breakfast and go out in the garden again mum says Im a good girl coz Im clean. In the afternoon mum takes me to her vets.He is shocked at all my scars and shaved bits.Everyone is nice and kind to me.Im given antibiotics for my side.
Ive soon settled down into my new house. The stairs arent scary any more.As my side has healed my confidence has soared.I have found the food bin which I tipped all over the floor. My mum and dad make sure all doors are closed and there is no food left out.Im given 3 meals a day with a boneo at lunch time.My coat is shiney[that is where Ive got hair],ears pricked, and eyes so bright,Ive even put on weight. After my third day here I taught myself to use the dog flap. This is great.Im going to like being here. But I have noticed Mum is starting to tell me off,[ive only eaten 2 remotes, strawberries,a hanky, the bin,and hidden a wii remote.]She uses this clicker when Im good!Still cant sit, but one day I will.
On Wednesday im having my jabs and chip in my shoulder so I can go out.The farmer has cut the field oppersite my house so hopefully they will plough it soon so Dingo and me can run in it.Ive walked in it a few times so I know where I am.
Do you know what, Im glad I didnt show the racing man I can run.If I had I would not know about this side to life until I was 4 or 5 and thats if I was really lucky to be rescued.
Thank you Wendy and others like you.I owe my life to you,as many other Greyhounds do.
By the way I have a name not just letters in ears. Its mine for keeps just like my family is.Oh yes its POSSUM.Thats me Possum, to go with Dingo.
Anyway this is Possum signing out. Woof woof yes I can bark.
